Steam Shower Enclosure in Paramus, NJ

Floor-to-ceiling steam shower enclosure with a transom, bench and windows in Paramus, NJ

Photo retouched with AI.

This steam shower enclosure was installed in a home in Paramus, in Bergen County. One wide wall of glass closes off the shower up to the ceiling, with a door and a transom built in. Inside, windows bring in daylight, and there’s a tiled bench.

The glass fits inside a decorative border, so we measured once the tile and trim were in. Our own team installed every panel.

Project details

  • Layout: steam enclosure, glass to the ceiling, transom over the door
  • Location: Paramus, Bergen County, NJ
  • Inside the shower: windows and a built-in bench

Big glass for a big steam shower

A front this size is made of tall, heavy panels. Half-inch glass weighs about 6.5 lb per square foot, so a single steam door can pass 100 lb. We check the size and weight of every panel at the measurement, then pick the glass thickness and hinges to carry it.

Heavy doors also need solid backing in the wall behind the hinges. Tile and backer board alone aren’t enough, so plan the hinge spots with us before the walls are closed.

Windows and a bench inside the shower

Windows inside a steam shower are part of the build, so plan them with your builder first. For the glass, what matters is where the bench and windows sit next to the glass line.

A bench should either run through the glass line or sit far enough away to clean behind. We avoid leaving a 2″ or 3″ slot between the bench and the glass. See bench placement.

Questions

Can a steam shower have a window? Yes. Your builder plans the window for steam, and we fit the glass to the finished opening around it.

Why plan the hinge spots so early? Because the backing goes in before the tile. Once the walls are tiled, adding it means opening them up again. See wall backing for hinges.
